Creepin' - Halloween 2011

Getcha knees flexin' and your arms t-rexin' and creep, aaaaaaaahhhhhh!!!

We were creeps for Halloween. Great thing about this costume... pockets! And no sewing stuff together last minute!! The only item I actually had to make were the glasses. We had many pockets for necessary Halloween items, like our flasks. Always, always be prepared!

Doctor Who Wallpaper: Amy Pond and the Silence

Oh, that feeling when Amy's reflection in "Day of the Moon" reveals that she has seen far too many Silents, that "oh crap!" feeling, yeah, I'm getting it just thinking about it.

It's OWL good!

Finally giving myself more time to work on what I love. Too bad silver has been around $40/oz lately (about four times the cost I was paying when I started making sterling silver jewelry in 2006). I'm turning to less expensive metals like copper and brass to satisfy my jewelry making needs. I have a couple of giant sheets of copper right now, but it's so thin! I had no idea how much that mattered with sawing sheet metal. The metal bends as you're sawing and since I'm still learning how to saw sheet metal, I end up breaking a ton of saw blades. One thing that I found helped is that I took a square of copper and hammered it a bit until the metal wasn't as malleable. I only broke one blade for this owl pendant, and that makes me super happy!

"Are you my mummy?"

Dragon*Con 2011 in Atlanta, GA

For those of you who don't get the reference, our costumes are from the episode "The Empty Child" from Season 1 of Doctor Who. Alex found these sweet authentic WWII British civilian issued gas masks somewhere online. So we cleaned them and then gutted the respirator with my dad's can opener from the army for opening MRE's, to get all of the charcoal, mesh, and junk out.

Visit my Flickr photostream for more pictures from Dragon*Con!

Doctor Who Wallpaper: Sometimes Evil Doesn't Make a Sound...

I've been searching for screenshots from Doctor Who/ Buffy to make a new tshirt design. In the meantime, here's a new wallpaper I made. Not safe for those who had nightmares about the Silence.

Tattoo idea for a friend. Oh, you know how I love drawing angler fish. I'm going to do a painting of this in gouache, koi tattoo style.

Thrifted End Table

I've been feeling super thrifty lately. I can't wait to be done with school so I can concentrate more on jewelry and refinishing fun thrift store finds. Anyway, this is a pretty sweet end table that I found at a thrift store recently on sale for a whopping $7.20. It definitely needed a bit of fixing up and my dad helped me reinforce the legs, but I'm pretty excited.

I'm torn as to what I want to do with it, but I've been on a turquoise and red kick lately, so I went ahead and painted one coat of turquoise. I'm thinking about leaving the one coat as is and painting a red octopus on the top with a tentacle wrapping around one of the legs. Then maybe putting a glaze to get those awesome details in the sides of the table. This will be my first glazing project, so that should be fun :)

So, here are a couple progress pictures. Sorry for the blurriness! I forgot to take a before picture with an actual camera, so my camera phone will have to do for now.

After this is done, my next projects are going to be painting my desk yellow and decoupaging the top and drawers and refinishing all of the furniture in my bedroom.

I also fell in love with this lamp from Anthropologie but am pretty hesitant to spend $198 plus shipping on it, so I'm going to try to create my own version. The only thing is that I'm torn between keeping it all white, or using all blue and white china. I've been a bit obsessed lately with blue and white china and pick it up whenever I see it at the thrift store, so I have enough plates. Just need to get the teapot and a few bowls and cups!

Yay for three day weekends! Josh and I flew to Washington DC for Memorial Weekend. Take a look at my flickr account to see the pictures I took. :)

Delta Sigma Pi - South Central LEAD Baton Rouge 2011 - Pie Contest

Yeah, I've been neglecting this blog. But, this is what I've been up to. I was in Baton Rouge all weekend for a Delta Sigma Pi conference, and I've been studying for the licensing exam for work. I put this video together last night from the Penny Wars contest at the conference. The Region with the most money raised could have one person from each chapter pie their RVP in the face. Pies were also auctioned off to throw at our PVP. Enjoy!

lazy envelopes

Yeah, this is the kind of week I've been having. I think I've been reading too much 27b/6 lately.

Guest Doodle - Alex

This was sent to me by Alex. Apparently, I'm a "cranky pants" today or something.

Daily Doodle - 10

Like a record, baby. Right 'round, 'round, 'round.

I think I'm going to have to make a last minute change in my costume for Comic Con this weekend. Still going to be Doctor Who themed, but probably made of cardboard and tin foil... We'll see how this works out! Cross your fingers for me ;)

Doctor Who/Torchwood Wallpapers

Made by yours truly. A friend requested Ten/Rose-Jack/Ianto wallpaper and I've gotta share. If you post these anywhere, please link back to my blog. Thanks!! -Ang

Daily Doodle - 9

This is what friends are for. <3

In case you haven't noticed, I'm kind of in love with anglerfish and Alex has a thing for octopi. This pretty much sums up our friendship. Octa is obviously providing Angler with a comfy place to rest, while Angler is Octa's booklight.

Daily Doodle - 8

Alis Volat Propriis - "She flies with her own wings."

I stamped this latin phrase on a silhouette of a dragonfly wing that I cut out of sterling silver and made it into a pendant. It looked more like a blob, or part of the silhouette of Florida. Hah! Oh well... one for the scrap pile!

Daily Doodle - 7

Yup, this is all I have for tonight. I'll have to post a picture of the view from my office window of the superdome. Well, not MY office, the office next to my cubicle, but anyway, our building is right across the street from the superdome. I also made a superdome pendant with "Who Dat Nation" stamped on it. I'll post a picture of that soon, too.

Speaking of NOLA themed stuff I need to post, I did a pretty sweet logo for something at work with the New Orleans cityscape and I'm waiting for the trademark to be processed before I post it. And, go figure, it started off as a doodle on a post-it.

Daily Doodle - 6

I'm going to try to convince my coworkers that Alex and I are the same person since we haven't been here at the same time at all since she started on Monday.

I've decided to do something different for my costume for Comic Con just so I don't have to sew a dress. This costume involves prosthetic teeth, a nightgown, and hairspray. You win cool points if you see my costume and know who/what I am!

Daily Doodle - 5

Drawing hands is absolutely horrible. I have to force myself to draw hands once in a while just so it doesn't totally terrify me.

I took an awesome nap when I got home. Now I'm up all night. Awesome. Keep your fingers crossed that I don't fall asleep in this class today.

Flying Zombies!

"They’re coming!! Get ready to meet Mike and Steve, two best friends who are trying to find a decent place to eat durring the zombie apocalypse,  January 17 the fun kicks off in Flying Zombies #1. It’s going to be a fun ride."
www.flyingzombies.com
My friend's webcomic, Flying Zombies, was officially launched yesterday after an awesome release party on Saturday with fun door prizes, a birthday cake for Benjamin Franklin, tacos, and prom style photos with Randy Rambo. Take a look at it. Bookmark it. Tell your friends all about it. It's good stuff.

Daily Doodle - 4

My bestie, Alex, is starting her first day at her 3rd job today, which just happens to be in my office. Unfortunately, I won't be there today or tomorrow because I'll be taking an insurance prelicensing course at the time. She should find this note on her desk via post-it note in a few hours. Enjoy, Alex! :)

Bath Balls a la Martha Stewart

This is a bit late, but still worth posting. For Christmas, I made the mistake awesome decision to have a DIY Christmas. Just about every gift given by yours truly was handmade-ish (handcrafted?) in my very own apartment. But right now, I'm just going to post about the bath balls and packaging that I made for the ladies in my family. I used this bath snowball tutorial from Martha Stewart's website. A word of warning, though, only do this when you have enough time to try again and definitely wait longer than 24 hours to remove the remaining half from the bath ball. The first time I attempted these, I only let them sit overnight and trying to reshape them is a huge pain, trust me. A trick that I learned (and could not find online) after breaking many of these in half for removing the second half of the mold is to lightly tap the plastic mold, while holding it upside down in your hand, and then carefully twist the mold off of the bath ball. For these, I used blue food coloring with lavender essential oils and orange food coloring with pomegranate and vanilla essential oils. I used large mason jars, colorful tissue paper, and ribbon for the container. Then, instead of wrapping, I wanted the recipients to be able to reuse the packaging, so I painted each person's initials on blank tote bags, sewed on a flower, and painted their names on Christmas ornaments instead of using tags.

Luckily, I have an awesome family who loved (or at least pretended to love =P) their handmade goodies. I've heard horror stories of people who have made wonderful handmade gifts (which, as I have learned, typically cost more than store bought gifts and take much planning and hard work) only to be told things like "We understand, everyone is having money problems right now. It's the thought that counts." I can't imagine telling someone something like that. Even that hideous handmade sweater from your granny with the hot air balloons painted on with puffy fabric paint. Just smile, say "thank you" with enthusiasm, and shove it to the back of your closet in case you ever have to prove that you liked it enough to keep it.

Daily Doodle - 3

For Alex and her love of octopi.

I just started a new sketchbook since my other one has become my jewelry sketchbook. This is the first page. It makes me smile.

Now I'm off to do some shopping for my costume for Comic Con. Wooo!

Daily Doodle - 1

Okay, so I'm going to try to do a doodle a day, and they're probably going to be on post-it notes, minus the yellow background because of a b&w scanner. Starting..... now.
Have I mentioned my unhealthy fascination with anglerfish??
